100_0214_1.jpgThe El Camino Real Baseball facility was built along with the school in 1968. Over the last 38 years the baseball diamond has steadily improved into what it is today. “The Pit” as adoring fans and heated rivals commonly refers it to is now considered one of the finest playing surfaces in southern California.

Improvements to the baseball field started in the mid 80’s when the right field fence line was added to separate the baseball field from the track. In 1985 the first electronic scoreboard was added in left-center field along with electricity for the bullpen areas down the left field and right field lines.

In 2000 the outfield tarps were put up from foul line to foul line. Mother nature showed her wrath in the spring of 2000 as the Santa Ana winds took down the entire right field fence with. The fence was reinforced with poles every 5 feet, which center and right fielders alike have grown to love. In 2001 the entire facility was enclosed with field tarps, which enhances the look and feel of the field.

In 2001 the dugouts were expanded to allow more room for players on both benches to roam. The dugouts were enclosed with vinyl tarps and a shade cover was added. In 2003 the dugout benches were removed and replaced with double decker seating on both sides of the field. Rubber matting was installed on the dugout floor.

The bullpen on the visitors side of the field was moved from its spot outside of the playing field and put down the right field line. The previous batting cage down the left field line was converted into a double bullpen for the Conquistadors during the 2001 season as well.

In 2002 batting cages were built up on top of the field. Two tunnels that are each 60 feet long and 15 feet wide were erected. The area was cemented and covered with astro turf. One cage features an Iron Mike pitching machine. Soft toss nets were built in the fall of 2003.  In December of 2005 the batting cages went thru an overhaul.  The cages were expanded to 4 full tunnels and an addtional 200 yards of concrete ws poured.  The polls were reinforced and new net was hung..

In 2003 the original scoreboard was taken down and replace by a 10 inning LED light scoreboard. The scoreboard features a wireless controller and LED team names.

The 2003-year brought another exciting change to the ECR diamond as a new Tiff Green Bermuda sod Bermuda infield was installed. The new turf brought the field to another level. Grass baselines highlight and infield that is beautifully manicured. In the winter months the infield and outfield are over seeded with winter rye grass that keeps the field green and lush throughout the season. In 2005 the turf was replaced once again.

Also added in 2004 was the varsity field house. A 40-foot shipping container was gutted, painted, and dry walled, and carpeted. Electricity was installed along with a sound system and television. Pro style Oak lockers for all varsity players is definitely the highlight of the project.

Plans for the upcoming years include the removal of the dreaded backstop [Completed in 2007].

Once again the baseball program has excelled not only on the field, but in the classroom. 20 players ended the Spring semester with a 3.0 or higher. Great job guys, keep up the hard work.
